• ‘Kirkus Reviews’ Resurrects + more

kirkus_reviews_coverA few weeks ago, Nielsen Business Media announced it would shut down two of its publishing industry trade magazines, including the book-related Kirkus Reviews. Now there is news that Kirkus Reviews will keep publishing issues for the foreseeable future.

An internal memo from the journal’s managing editor, Eric Liebetrau, was reprinted in a DailyFinance blog entry, breaking the good news:

Effective immediately, we are restarting publication of Kirkus Reviews. There is a buyer in the works (that’s all we know right now), and until the deal closes – probably 2-3 weeks – we will resume business as usual under the Nielsen umbrella.

A brief notice on Kirkus‘ website reads, “[…] for now we will publish a second issue in January, and then reassess the situation and hopefully continue publication in February and beyond.” Liebetrau has also requested publishers to begin sending galleys to appropriate Kirkus editors immediately.

Kirkus Reviews was founded in 1933 and published nearly 5,000 book reviews a year. Libraries and bookstores, among others in the industry, have relied on it for early reviews of upcoming releases.

* Steve Rosato has been promoted to event director of BookExpo America (BEA). Rosato has worked on the show for over 10 years, including assistance with growing the Global Market Forum program which features literature of a specific country or region at each year’s event.

* Hearst has released images of its upcoming Skiff Reader, an e-reader that will enter the market later this year. It is the first consumer product to use a thin, flexible sheet of stainless-steel foil as its e-paper display. The Skiff digital storefront will sell magazines, newspapers, and books for the device.
